Schweitzer set himself the task of exploring the structure and genesis of Kant’s philosophy of religion. It made for a complex undertaking, as Kant’s philosophy of religion is difficult to integrate systematically into his broader thinking.

More important than his female acquaintances at this time was his relationship to Charles-Marie Widor. And this late summer of 1893 was to become an important one for Schweitzer, as the reserved and unsure schoolboy became a self-confident master student in the first discipline he was to take up—namely, music.
