My tote is made with black wool and lined with laminated cotton. You could just as easily sew a cross-stitched ribbon to a store-bought tote, either in the same direction I did, or as a border going around the top of the bag horizontally. Voilà To add the stitched border to a tote, apply the ribbon by machine or hand sewing to the front and back piece of your favorite bag pattern after you’ve cut those pieces out—before you’ve assembled the bag. Waves of Plenty Table Scarf Pattern THREAD: Anchor six-strand embroidery floss (use two strands) COLORS: 170 (2 skeins) CLOTH: Linen evenweave 28 count, cream (I used a 20" x 27" piece to create a 12" x 18" cloth) OTHER MATERIALS: Backing fabric in the same dimensions as your finished front piece.
The fabric is described in count, or the number of threads per inch. A 28count evenweave has 28 warp (vertical) threads and 28 weft (horizontal) threads intersecting each other in every square inch of material. Thread count sizes can vary from 11 count all the way up to 40 count, which is very fine. There are several color varieties to choose from, although natural, cream, and pale tones are among the most popular. I found the visual drama of working a design onto black in my Menagerie at Midnight project very exciting, so don’t limit yourself.
After the design is stitched, you carefully discard the waste cloth by pulling the threads of them away one by one. There are also other varieties of waste cloth that will dissolve. I could have essentially chosen any fabric to sew a garment with, but for this project I specifically wanted to purchase a readymade garment. So my first job was to go shopping for some garments to stitch on, keeping in mind the fact that I would be spending a little time on these pieces; I wanted them to be affordable but not too cheaply made.
