Right beside it. You don’t have to get out of your car to see this beauty, but you’d be crazy not to. Walk down the steps to the base of the falls and feel the cold spray on your face. One mile farther up the road is the trailhead for Moore Cove Falls, another beauty. You’re going to have to walk a little to see this one, but the three-quarter-mile hike is well worth it.

Among the unlikely theories are automobile or train headlights (the phenomenon was seen before trains existed in the area and also seen right after the 1916 flood that grounded all motorized transportation), methane gas (no source for it), bioluminescence (that type of light is too faint), and refraction from distant electric lights (electric lights were not in existence in the area when the lights were first seen). Among the not-yet-disproved theories are ball lightning, magnetic plasma, and charges resulting from seismic activity.

But someone did put a road through there. And Caroline Brinegar got a firsthand look when it cut across the front yard of her cabin! Beginning in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, the highway follows the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains for most of its 469 miles. Toward the southern end, it passes over the Black Mountains, the Great Craggies, the Great Balsams, the Plott Balsams, and into the Great Smoky Mountains. The government gave the road its official name of Blue Ridge Parkway. The local mountain people called it simply The Scenic.
