In emerging New World wine regions, wine tourism has also assisted wine producers in overcoming scepticism about the potential for quality wine to be produced in non-traditional wine regions and an over-reliance on imported wine (Dodd 1995; Hackett 1997; see also Chapter 13). However, the importance of wine tourism will also depend on the stage of development that the wine and tourism industries have reached. For example, Desplats (1996) reports on a comparative study of tourism strategies employed by the Armagnac and Cognac industries in Aquitaine.

The number of countries which produce wine is quite remarkable, although it should be noted that much of this wine will be for domestic consumption while much will also be for cheaper bulk wines. However, the extent of production does help illustrate the competitive nature of the international wine market. One of the most interesting aspects of wine consumption in these tables is the extent to which it has fallen on a per capita basis in ‘traditional’ wine countries of Europe and the Mediterranean, with an increase in newer markets in Asia and North America.
