1 The Netherlands have a strong tradition of granting nationality to aliens under liberal conditions, if they apply for naturalisation. Of the total population of the Netherlands, 1 434 000 (more than 9% of the population) were born abroad. Although most of them were not of Netherlands origin, the majority possess Netherlands nationality at the moment. To illustrate: . 175 000 persons were born in Indonesia/Netherlands East Indies. . .
