The question is, freedom from what? There is a condition in which man finds himself, and from which he desires to be freed. We are given a clue about this condition if we return to the primitive religions and look at the reasons that lead primitive man to offer sacrifice. One reason, as we have seen, is that a strange omen appears that threatens the tribe’s survival. The teachers of the mature religions however state quite simply that survival is not the ultimate goal; life has a deeper meaning, and the choice to die rather than to survive can be a meaningful alternative.
In the West the philosopher Schopenhauer was one of the first thinkers to recognize their pre-eminence. Through our senses we perceive colour, sound, taste, smell, heat and cold. Philosophers have referred to these as the ‘secondary qualities’ of reality. Whereas we know this manifestation of reality through the senses we only know reality itself through an act of intuition. It is the diverse character of reality that is known through the senses, but its unity which is its essential nature is only known through insight.
