Many of those systems are still in use today. One of the major developments of the 1960s in computing technology was the concept of time-sharing. A time-sharing system allows more than one user—often as many as several hundred—to use the same computer simultaneously. Users could run their own programs, and each user interacted with the computer using a terminal. Most of these early mainframe terminals were mechanical teletypewriter-type units. By the mid-1970s, the video display terminal (VDT) had replaced printing terminals for many applications.
Today's public telephone network is a complex maze of telephone lines and central switching offices.
