1 At the beginning of the academic year 1925/26, just as he was completing Science and Poetry, he extended this experiment in a course of lectures, entitled ‘Practical Criticism’, delivered in the University. Sheets of poems were handed out one week, the attendants were asked to take the poems away with them and write reports on each of the pieces, to be returned, anonymously, the following week. Richards reviewed and then lectured on the reports, which he soon called ‘protocols’ (from the German protokoll, ‘record, observation’, a term he appears to have taken from his reading in contemporary laboratory psychology).
