Yet an adult who has spent months and years with an autistic child learns to recognize the intensity, the seeming aloofness and the disguised anxiety of a child who can’t find a comfortable place for himself in this world. We know one when we see one. Autism may manifest itself in a variety of forms and with differing severity. The most common manifestations are delayed speech, poor eye contact, low tolerance for transitions, frequent temper tantrums, rigid and limited taste in foods, patterns of repetitive movements and noises, and fixation on one activity or interest (one child may play only with toy cars, another with airplanes; Billy’s fixation is dragons–dragon books, dragon stories, dragon words, dragon toys, dragon videos…).
It was definitely worth the effort. One important thing that I learned from “buying time” is that Billy really didn’t like his tantrums. He used them to protest a situation that displeased him. He used tantrums to get what he wanted – but only as long as they worked. When he realized that in certain circumstances his tantrums didn’t get the desired result, he stopped throwing tantrums in those circumstances. In the case of evening television viewing, it took us about two weeks to have Billy go to his room without protesting.

I force him to take one, using a combination of reading, massage, lullabies and plain persuasion. It takes at least half an hour to put him to sleep. I use the time to catch up with the house.
